Seven Sisters (Birrinyba Yirridjangi)
Artwork Description
This large acrylic painting on canvas, Seven Sisters (Birrinyba Yirridjangi), tells the sacred creation story of the glowing Seven Sisters. Birrinyba Yirridjangi is the Djugun Aboriginal language word meaning “Glowing or Shining Seven Sisters.”
The artwork depicts seven radiant concentric circles, each representing one of the powerful Sisters who came to Earth. In the centre of each circle rests seven symbolic sticks — representing the Sisters planting their sacred energy into the land. With these sticks, they created the life-giving elements of Country — the fruit trees, plants, waterholes, rivers, mountains, and the natural environment that sustains all life.
At the heart of the painting are seven flowers, symbolising the Sisters as creation beings — nurturing the growth of plants, trees, and the flourishing beauty of the natural world. The glowing forms and vibrant colours in the artwork reflect their celestial energy, their connection to the stars, and their everlasting presence in the Dreaming.
As an Indigenous contemporary artist, I paint the stories of Country and the spirit of creation that continues to guide and nurture life. This piece honours the ancestral women, the Birrinyba Yirridjangi, whose light remains embedded in both sky and earth — reminding us that everything living is interconnected through the Dreaming.
