Women’s Fishing Boomerangs – Coral Waters
Women’s knowledge, strength, and connection to both sea and land.
AU$2500.00
Artwork Description
This large acrylic painting on canvas is inspired by the coral reefs and the ocean — a vibrant interpretation of the living waters and traditional women’s fishing tools from Country.
The colourful background represents the rich marine life and beauty of the coral reefs. The blue and orange concentric circles symbolise ripples in the water, reflecting the gentle movement of tides and the energy of life beneath the surface.
Scattered throughout the painting are small fishing boomerangs — tools traditionally used by Aboriginal women from my Country. These tiny boomerangs, sometimes crafted from the roots of mangrove trees, were skillfully thrown to strike the tops of fish, stunning them in the shallow waters.
This artwork pays tribute to women’s knowledge, strength, and connection to both sea and land. It honours the skill, patience, and deep understanding of nature that guided traditional fishing practices. The colours and rhythmic flow of the piece mirror the harmony between the ocean’s life and the women who sustained their communities through these sacred waters.
